Product Details
The “Kidney ore” mined here was the world’s purest iron ore and thousands of bore-holes were sunk in the area to find its sometimes irregular deposits. With the iron mines came a myriad of railway branch lines to carry the ore away to the smelters, many of which are now leafy paths abound with wildlife as are many limestone quarries visible in the area that were used to supply a flux to aid smelting. The mine was red with ore, including the miners! This picture was painted with paint made from Florence mine iron ore at the mine. Florence mine is near Egremont in west Cumbria and there are many interesting remains which can be visited today.
