The rugged and lonely upper Borrowdale valley embraces the now quiet ruin of Gilbert’s stage dressing floor and guard house at the world famous Wad mine. Here Wad was brought out to day from the heart of the myriad of shafts and tunnels of this ancient mine. Emerging onto the fell in the dying daylight many generations of men set off home through the now fading scene to a cottage or inn in the dale below where a warm fire and hearty meal awaited.
