The heathery slopes of Coombe height is cut by the attractive beck of Grains Gill that wanders searchingly into the grassy valleys and peaks adorning Knott and High pike. Where this beck breaches the faulted and broken rocks of the Carrock fell group Victorian miners struggled to mine Lead, until the Tungsten they initially discarded could be later smelted. This then made this mine one of the best Tungsten mines in Britain. The workings here lie at rest where Wheatear and Thrush call in summer and the beck now chuckles mostly to itself in its journey to Mosedale.
