The Duddon Iron furnace, nestled in the ancient charcoal producing woods that fuelled it, is a rare survivor of many in Cumbria that smelted Iron for centuries. The serenity of the woodland today belies the bustle of a smelter in full swing where a smelting would continue in a “campaign” of months at a time. Until recently the smelter was wreathed in ivy and fallen timber. In the foreground the sand casting floor would have been sprawled with scalding rivers of Iron glowing in the gloom and glinting on the craggy faces of the watching foundrymen.
