The Newlands valley reaches far into the high fells and is cut by many mineral veins that were worked from medieval times, with over two dozen mines in this one valley. The mine shop shown is a rare survivor and belonged to Broad Gill mine on the left, it was a dwelling, smithy and copper ore store where a dozen miners toiled to bring the gleaming minerals to daylight and the booming factories of Britain. The pinching in of the valley gives dramatic and tantalising views of mine and fell well worth the long walk up the mine track.
