During the clamorous rise of coal in west Cumbria fresh measures were hard to come by, so Lord Lonsdale decided to sink a pit under the sea here, the first such pit in England. Today, the stout remains of its engine house defiantly challenge the defeated ocean. Once,the engine house’s chimney stack would have belched smoke all day, the engine’s whistle would have heralded shift changes, but only the slow rhythm and hiss of the engine pumping or winding would be mirrored today by the eternal breaking of waves on the lonely shore below.



The original of this picture has been sold.
