Sledges were used at quarries to carry up to 1/2 ton of slates, being dragged on prepared tracks over the shifting scree. The quarryman’s return journey was made with the sled on his back about 6 times a day or more, breakages were common however tightly the slates and “stillage” were packed and were deducted from his pay. At the small loading bay on the pass to Buttemere, one can trace the track winding steeply up into the precipitous crags of the quarry that is the only remaining sign of this difficult job.
