The renovated winding drum of the Kimberly tramway amongst the slate, crags and workings of Honister slate quarry stands waiting to haul loaded bogies of slate down to the quarry’s workshops at the hause. However, the incline has not run for many years and is quiet now and only the old hands recall the frantic hum of the rails and winding drum as the slate raced its way down to the deft hands of the slate rivers from Borrowdale and Keswick. The drumhouse, and many other embankments and buildings, were expertly built with slate blocks with only a sliver of a gap here or there and have stood the test of time in biting mountain weather. Across the fell to Dubs quarry a larger drum once operated, suspended above the tramway with the waggons passing beneath as in Welsh slate quarries.
