The volcanic slate veins of Honister slate quarry cross the high hause between Buttermere and Borrowdale to lofty Yew Crag. Mechanical haulage in the form of an incline, seen here, was contrived to defeat the high and difficult terrain, many inclines, winches, tramways, landings and buildings remain after many years reflecting the quarrymen’s determination and ingenuity. Two slate veins seen in Honister crag opposite are similarly adorned and show the scale of the workings, the quarrymen rising above the challenges of living and working in the wild dales.
